Ogopogo--Canada's Nessie
May 31st 2009 02:43
I was watching TV a few weeks ago and saw a report on something I'd never heard about before--Canada's Ogopogo. The bottom line is Ogopogo is the name given to a lake creature, resembling the Loch Ness Monster, reported to live in Okanagan Lake, in British Columbia, Canada.
The beast reportedly is the 'many hump' variety of lake monster, and is sometimes thought to be a kind of primitive serpentine whale. But, since evidence is limited to unclear photographs and grainy video, others think sightings are misidentifications of common animals or even inanimate objects. Some go so far as to say Ogopogo is the misidentification of a seich which are waves traveling a in long, slow motion below the surface of some lakes and the play of light and shadow causes inaccurate identification.
To the credit of the program, no comparisons with the Loch Ness Monster were made but things were different when I started doing a some research on the Web. Further, despite the fact that the program must have been making a deliberate attempt not to make comparisons, you still heard phrases such as "...land locked sea creature..." or "...prehistoric adaptation..."
Oddly enough, this legend predates Nessie by more than 80 years. The first sighting, allegedly, surfaced as the region was colonized by European settlers. No doubt, Natives of the area made sighting before that but this it was not until the 1870's that sightings were recorded.
Despite the fact Ogopogo may not be as famous as the Loch Ness Monster, it still has its share of devotees and "lake monster" hunters from all over the world. Some go so far as to claim that there have been more sightings of Ogopogo than of the Loch Ness Monster but these sighting often go unreported or get less coverage by the media.
Whatever the case, it's nice to know Canada has given the world something besides hockey.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!

I've been to Okanagan Lake, but alas, had no Ogopogo sightings. But I did get some sweet gear from the gift shop
You know, I am more inclined to believe that there is something "fishy' (pardon the pun) at Okanagan Lake than Loch Ness. Some of the sightings are down right believable.
Thanks for the fun post!

I'm glad you commented. People think I make this stuff up! *L*
I forget what program I was watching but I hung on every word! The Falls were okay but this is something I'd really enjoy!
