The Oklahoma Octopus

December 9th 2011 22:30
Sometimes insomnia can be a good thing as I discovered a few nights ago when there wasn't much on the tube. I ran across an episode of Lost Tapes on Animal Planet talking about the Oklahoma Octopus.

If you're not familiar with Lost Tapes, it's basically one of those programs exploring weird happenings in nature and, like all programs of that ilk, asks more questions than it answers.

Back to the real subject--the legend of the Oklahoma Octopus basically boils down to another Loch Ness Monster type story set in the ocean starved Oklahoma area of the U.S. An octopus is believed to inhabit lakes of the Sooner State killing, and even eating unsuspecting swimmers. The problem is octopi are salt water creatures.

Is something like this beneath Oklahoma waters?

Of course, an explanation for this phenomenon is the old story of a salt water creature that was cut off from the ocean and adapted over generations to live in the fresh water of the lake. This theory is nice but, it's just that, a theory. How did that first creature survive? Most would say ADAPT is the key word.

Today we know a bull shark can regulate the salinity in its body. Perhaps, thousands of years ago, other animals could do this? There were no oceanographers back then so who knows? The only concrete evidence of anything is the fact, mentioned in the episode, that drownings increased 40% in a year's time.

Is this blog going to attempt to answer the riddle of the Oklahoma Octopus? Heck no! If scientist can't come up with answers, how can an angler behind a laptop?

If you Google Angling Fish, it says this a blog of tips and news. The Oklahoma Octopus isn't the most current topic for this blog but, now it's out there for you to ponder.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Abercrombie,

I honestly have no opinion. This is probably one of those things we'll never get definitive answers on. Thanks for your input tho.
