What's a paddle tail?

December 4th 2009 01:41
Almost anyone who fishes very much has heard of swimbaits. However, take it a bit further and figure out what a paddle tail is.

A quick thinker can usually figure out the meaning. The tail looks pretty much like a paddle as opposed to a straight tail swimbait . Both are pictured on the right to show the difference.

Fishing lure tails
A couple looks at the paddle tail and a straight tail is at the bottom.
Either one will usually give pretty good action. On a paddletail, the body of the lure is fairly rigid and the tail moves back and forth. With a straight tail swimbait, the body looks segmented and this design allows the lure to mimic a fish's motion. I've seen some great examples of this but I've also seem some that were nearly motionless. You usually get what you pay for but this is not always the case. The accompanying video shows you what to look for in choosing a paddle tail.

Hope you didn't sit through all of that! I gotta start making my own vids!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
