PIcking a lure

May 6th 2009 00:37
Fishing lures

There are several factors that contribute to a lure's success. One of the most frequently asked question about fishing is probably "What lure should I use?" If you'd ask a dozen different anglers what they think is the best lure around, you'd probably end up with 12 different answers and each angler would have a pretty decent argument for their answer.

The "right" lure is one of the most difficult questions in angling because of all the variables involved in attracting different species of fish and the type of equipment being used in conjunction with those lures. Weather, air and water temperature, and even an angler's ability can make the choice of the "right" lure a tough call.

To get a fish's attention, the lure might mimic the action of their prey. This is a quality which can be the greatest contributors to a lure's success, although many anglers rely on color. The effects of different colors can't be discounted but it pays to concern yourself more attention to the action of a lure.

There are all kinds of fishing lures on the market--swimbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinners, in-line spinners, buzzbaits, and when you throw soft plastics into the mix you can see where a trip to the tackle shop can be overwhelming. You have to figure there are hundreds if not THOUSANDS of choices out there. Despite this number, simply having a lure, even if it's one used by a famous angler to win a major tournament, is no guarantee of success. All in all, the best lures are the ones that work for YOU.

If I go to Florida, I can't use all the lures I use here in Pennsylvania. Further, those lures probably won't work for the guy in Thailand, and his lures probably won't work, or even be available, in Germany. That's the way of the world and the WWW.

If you're reading this hoping for a shred of wisdom or a secret that will lead you to the "right" lure, you've come to the wrong place. Those who read this blog with any regularity can read between the lines and find that I don't believe in any one lure that's right for everyone. I've even had "hot" lures one year that catch little or nothing the next year! The only wisdom I'll give you is this: Dark Day = Dark Color/
Bright Day = Bright Color and try and match your bait to what the fish are feeding on.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!
