Studies show piranhas communicate by sound
October 17th 2011 17:15
Most people know that whales communicate by a series of clicks and whistles. Did you know that piranhas do something very similar?
Researchers in Belgium have been using underwater microphones and have discovered three distinct tones the mighty mites use in communication including the ability to intimidate rivals.
The fish usually swim along peacefully but the ability to intimidate a rival comes in handy because it is believed animals use less energy warding off enemies than they would in an actual fight.
Included in the attached article are the sounds made by piranhas. I hope they play for you because I found this brief article fascinating although I'm not planning any trips to the Amazon--at least not in the near future.
