Fish escape mercury from coal-fired power plants
October 24th 2010 01:13
It may come as a surprise to many and goes against most thinking but studies have found that fish near coal-fired power plants actually have less mercury in their systems than those found further away.
These findings, released earlier this month are surprising because coal-fired power plants are a leading source of mercury air emissions and much of the resulting mercury settles close to plant's smokestacks.
These results may have a direct link to another chemical which creates its own problems--selenium. To make a long story short, as mercury levels decrease, studies show selenium levels rise.
