Angling Fish - by James Rickard

Everywhere you look (this blog included) they sing the praises of fishing around docks.

There are good docks, bad docks, and in between docks.

The best docks to fish around are going to be wooden docks. Unfortunately, the more rotten and water-soaked the wood, the better the fishing usually is!

After that would be docks that have a wooden mooring area supported by metal or vice-versa.

Failing at that, look for docks that have some mossy Styrofoam supporting the metal.

Last on the list would be all aluminum docks.

No matter what kind of dock you find, don't expect a lot of fish if there is a lot of boat traffic.

Lastly, regardless of the kind of structure you find, if it's made from a metal that rusts, it's probably going to attract a few fish.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Think you don't need a tacklebox?

April 13th 2008 00:58
When people say, "I don't fish that much. Do I really need a tacklebox?" I say, "Yes!"

As you fish more and more, lures and other tackle accumulate. You're going to need somewhere to store all the gear and it's not a good idea to put hooks in your pocket.

Weekend tip--look for birds

March 15th 2008 00:53
In this day and age, technology has even crept into fishing. More than one angler uses a fish finder or even an underwater camera.

Before these miracles of science came into being, you could always rely on Mother Nature to tell you where to fish.

Traveling with a fishing rod

cabela rod tube
Cabela's makes a rod tube anyone can afford.
It never fails, if you go on vacation and don't have a rod with you, you get the opportunity to fish. Traveling with a rod???? It can be done with a lot less hassle than you think.
Flambeau rod tube
If you're going very far, whether by car, bus, plane, or train, your best bet is going to be to carry your rod in a rod tube.

How to clean a fish

October 17th 2007 00:24
The worst thing about catching fish is NOT the actual catching part. In my opinion, it's after you take the fish home and have to clean it. (If you've done it once or twice, you can see why restaurants at the shore charge so much to clean and cook your catch!) The older I get, the less I like doing it! That must be why I'm one of those catch-and-release advocates!

Anyhoo, you can watch this video and get a good idea of what to do. They're cleaning a walleye but, what they're doing applies to anything you catch. They're cutting the fish into fillets which isn't quite as gross as some of the other methods for cleaning fish.

Weekend tip--watch where you cast

September 29th 2007 01:29
NEVER cast your bait directly at a fish! Always cast past where the fish is holding and then slowly bring the bait to the fish!
