Safety first

January 8th 2012 01:59
fishing

For the most part, fishing is a fairly safe sport. On the other hand, if you’re new to the sport, it may be a good idea to take a moment and think about a few things.

First and foremost, and this should come as no surprise, those hooks are mighty sharp and if you run across one that isn’t sharp, it’s probably pretty rusty. Exercise a little caution and watch yourself anytime you start going through your tackle box.

One of the most effective methods of preventing accidents is to simply be aware of what is going on around you. Accidents usually happen when a person has stopped paying attention to the things going on around them. Naturally, if you’re fishing alone with plenty of space on either side, you can let your guard down to a certain extent. On the other hand, if it’s a day when lots of people are wetting a line, it pays not only to watch what you’re doing but everybody else. With lines, lures, or flies over the place and whizzing through the air, you never know what each moment till bring. AND don’t forget more than one rod has been broken by errant anglers!

It’s always a good idea to look at what everyone is doing as well. It may be just another day at the lake for you but, for some, it may be their first fishing excursion.

This is probably going to infuriate some people but another thing you can do to insure the safety of all is to pay attention to what your children are doing. Youthful enthusiasm makes children prime candidates to step on a hook, break a rod, or even fall into the water. If you want to be well liked by your fellow anglers, keep an eye on your children and don’t make their safety the responsibility of others.

There are plenty of other things to watch out but, if you’re new to fishing this is enough for now!

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

How to set the hook

November 7th 2011 17:12
If you don't get fish on the hook, you won't get them out of the water.

There are a couple of hooksets out there that are popular.

Keeping and raising worms

July 21st 2011 02:09
If worms are you bait of choice, it seems like it's nearly impossible to find any before you go fishing unless you go to a bait shop. On the other hand, it's not that difficult to grow your own and have them all season.

european night crawlers
A few tricks of the trade are common to all worms and one of the most obvious is the soil. You don't want the dirt to be too dry but, you don't want it too moist either. If you notice your worms on top of the soil, it may be too wet. A good rule of thumb is to grab a handful of soil and make a fist. If the soil clumps, you're probably okay or, at least, on the right track. Each colony of worms will be different so, some trial and error will probably be in order. But, remember, you don't want to drown your worms.

One way to tell if the guy at the bait shop knows his stuff is to buy a dozen night crawlers and ask, "Are these Canadian night crawlers or African?" If the guy selling the worms has much experience with the public, he can quickly choose one of the two answers and make it sound convincing whether it's right or wrong.

The term "night crawler" is actually a catch-all phrase denoting any large worm no matter where you find it. Since this blog originates in the Eastern United States, we won't try and snow you with regurgitations from science books but rather, tell you what has been learned from experience.

Although the calendar says spring, it's still pretty cold in different parts of the country. But, natural clocks are kicking in and fish are starting to move into shallow areas as the days get longer and slightly warmer (at least to them.)
You’ll have to analyze your local water to determine where fish are and how to best catch them. If I had any shortcuts to get that done, I'd tell you!

Noisy Anglers

March 31st 2011 01:24
I’m not a big believer in common noises scaring fish. Common, every day noises probably aren’t going to scare fish and if they do, the fish will be back soon.

However, one of the biggest mistakes anglers make is they don't think about spooking fish until it’s too late. Long before they make even their first cast, they run to the water’s edge or grab their boat’s anchor and toss it out, mimicking an Olympic shot-putter. This isn’t all that common and if you decide to wait for the fish to come back, you may be in for a long wait!

Some fishing basics

February 8th 2011 01:55
Fishing’s popularity is increasing every day as more and more people hit the water or shore to try their luck. Needless to say, these people are going to need a little help to get going and meet their expectations because although angling can be rewarding, it gets old really fast when you’re not catching anything!

There’s more to successful fishing besides simply having the right tackle. Knowing what areas to fish, baits, and even weather reports all are involved in the sport to some extent, but a tackle often goes undiscussed.

WD-40 as a fish attractant

December 31st 2010 01:03
WD-40, fish attractant, fish oil
People often look at WD-40 as a fish attractant. One big reason for this is the myth that the product contains fish oil.

Although the exact formula is a secret, I can safely say the product does not contain fish oil. Like similar products, it is petroleum based and using it as a fish attractant is would be similar to pouring oil into the water. In other words, it's not the best thing to do even if it worked for grandpa.

Try "Urban Fishing"

A lot of people think you can only fish if you get out of the city and they end up taking two or three hour car trips to the country. Not so! Urban areas can provide countless hours of quality fishing without the time and expense of a long trip.

How the moon affects your fishing

September 5th 2010 00:47
moonrise, moon through trees
You probably know saltwater fishermen regularly check the tide before they head out to sea. They're not doing that just because the tide may affect boat handling. Rising tides also affect the fish bite. If you fish the sea that's all well and good but, did you know the tide also has bearing the bite down at your local river or lake?

Leaving out all the scientific mumbo-jumbo look at it like this—the gravity of the moon pulls at the earth. Since water is moved more easily than land, oceans, lakes, and rivers are going to fall victim to the pull on a regular basis as the earth revolves.

Where to look for fish

August 3rd 2010 03:45
The biggest challenge any angler can face is finding fish. This statement may seem like I'm stating the obvious but, no matter how good you think you are, you're NOT going to catch fish unless you find them first.
pond

If you're new to fishing, you may want to try your luck at a smaller location--possibly a local pond. These local holes are often looked down upon as "bush league" or counted out because many are simply too small to use the boat you think you have to use to be a "real" angler. These local fishing spots can be a good bet because they are often overlooked by other anglers.

barometer
Barometric Pressure exerts pressure on the waters we fish and if you think humans are immune, think again! On a muggy day, just before it rains, how often do you gingerly close you eyes and say, "My head is killing me?"

Studies have shown that it may have a similar effect on fish.

Watch those hands, fella!

As anglers, it's important to always consider any scents that may be on your hands. Even if you can't detect an odor on your hands, fish may and that can be the reason for a light bite or no bite at all!

Get out and fish in the fall!

October 11th 2009 01:23
fly fisherman
It's till not too late to hit the water. Around here, a lot of outdoor types are thinking "hunting" and heading for the woods. That can work to an angler's advantage because it often means less fishing pressure and you may even find you have one of the "sweet spots" all to yourself.

After spring, fall is one of the easiest times to fish. Fish, just like people, aren't crazy about cool mornings so, getting a late start isn't going to hinder your chances of landing the big one like it would if it was warmer. AND the fact that the water is cooler means the fish will be more active!

A quick boilie recipe

There are dozens (if not hundreds) of recipes for home made boilies. The big reason for sharing this one is because I was looking around for boilies this past week and came up with ZERO.

Timepieces for the angler

Greenwich clock

You want to wet your line but you have to pick the kids up from practice in an hour. What to do? You could tell time by the sun. Let me tell you, I've spent a lot of time outdoors and I still can't to that. A good watch is a lot more convenient and most people are going to say it's easier to use.

Superglue your swimbait

January 28th 2009 05:07
This is one of those tips I've been using for a while but never mentioned because there's always some wise guy who says, "Doesn't the fish smell the glue?"

I suppose they may but bass don't seem to mind and I haven't arrived at a verdict on catfish yet.
