Upgrade your reel handle

May 1st 2011 01:19
Here's an ad that popped up in my in-box the other day.

deep sea fishing
New fishing equipment comes out every other day so I'm not real crazy about promoting items unless I use them or it's one of those "Why didn't they think of this sooner?"

These after market reel handles from Reel Power Handles fall into the latter category and can be just the ticket if you do battle with big fish.

If you read this blog very often, you'll know I'm not a deep sea angler. None the less, big cat fish and muskies have shown me the need for a descent reel and, sometimes, it's only the cranking handle that makes the difference between something you feel good about using and a reel that sets in the garage.

You can check out the website yourself but, I'd like to point out Real Power Handles are made from aluminum to maintain strength while not adding weight to your rig. In fact, the new handle may be just a bit lighter that the old handle!

The only down side is that Real Power Handles start at 30 bucks USD a pop. Some people may be put off by this and I have to admit you can get a reel for less than that. However, if you've already spent hundreds on an "almost" reel, thirty bucks isn't a lot to pay to make it perfect.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Proper rod storage

fishing rods
If you're not going to be fishing for a long period of time such as I'm experiencing with the cold weather, proper storage of your fishing rod is imperative!

It's tempting to lean your rod against the wall or stick it in the corner and forget about it. However, this is the last thing you and to do! Leaning a rod against the wall can cause it to warp over time and reduce its effectiveness. Further, in the case of expensive bamboo fly rods, you're making the rod virtually useless because a warped rod is difficult to cast accurately.

An emergency line guide

Some of the handiest items an angler can have are a roll of tape and a paperclip.

Right now you're probably saying, "What the #*?&?????"

How to replace a rod tip

July 6th 2008 00:15
An economical way to pick up fishing rod is to buy one that's missing a rod tip at a someone's garage sale or some other place where everyone is getting rid of their "junk."

You can buy replacement tips at most sporting goods store or bait shops and it easier to replace a tip than you think.
