Men & Women Anglers--A level playing field? (Don't bet on it!)
February 21st 2011 21:10
Of all the sports where there are men and woman competitors, fishing is one sport that levels the playing field and allows men and women to compete equally.
At least in theory.
In 2010 B.A.S.S. eliminated the Women's Bassmaster Tour from the Bassmaster Tournament Trail. According to statements, despite efforts to grow the WBT, participation levels been declined significantly since the inception of the tour in 2005.
Here is a quote from ESPN--"This was a very tough decision and one that we didn't take lightly," said Tom Ricks, BASS general manager and vice president. "We made every effort to grow the WBT — even awarding WBT anglers a berth in the Classic — but ultimately it didn't resonate."
I have my own theory about this subject. Recent Bassmaster Classic winner Kevin VanDam pocketed $500,000. Past winners of the Women's Bassmaster Classic won something like $5,000 and a boat for around a $60,000 prize.
Money talks, Tom!
