Rapala reels

rapala spinning reel

It seems like I've spent a lot of time lately fishing with the same guy. Like most of us, he appreciates a good product at a decent price. Realizing that, it comes as no surprise he uses a Rapala spinning reel.

Rapala SX10i
The top of the line SX10i featured 10 ball bearings but retailed at only $80!
It's a shame these reels are off the market because they had a lot going for them. Whether you get a 10 ball bearing model or a reel with only four bearings, you can rest assured you are getting stainless steel as opposed to carbon steel bearings used by other companies which can ultimately rust. In addition, the reel bodies were made from cast aluminum for added strength and durability as opposed to plastics or graphite. With these qualities in mind, although the reels were designed for freshwater fishing, they were rated "seawater worthy."

rapala SX6i
The SX6i
Although I'm taking in the past tense, these reels are still around in limited quantities because, according to information I obtained for Rapala, the reels were last marketed for the 2008 fishing season and you can still find them in shops or online auctions. I've seen the SX6i model around and the 4 and 5 bearing models (SX4i and SX5i respectively) still show up on Ebay.

I'm really not in the market for another reel. Still, I've found several SX6i models ranging anywhere from $25 to their original retail price of $50 USD.

I have a feeling that I'm going to find a good buy and give into temptation!

I own a Rapala 10 Bearing reel and have a terrible time trying to reel the bail closed. I have had this problem since I bought it a few years ago. I was wondering if this is a common problem with them or if your supposed to close the bail manually.
