Every now and then, readers of this blog hear the mantra, "Take card of your equipment" or words to that effect.
That advice is especially true around salt water and is driven home by the accompanying photograph.

Some look better than others!
In the picture are two vintage reel spools. The left spool is from a Pflueger Sea King 2188 and the one on the right is from a Penn Peerless No. 9.
Without manipulations or masking to hide the reflections, notice how pristine the Penn spool is.
By contrast, the Pflueger spool is in pretty bad shape. The metal is pitted beyond belief and an edge is even eaten away by corrosion. To make matters worse, I could not remove all the white salt deposits despite three long baths in the ultrasonic cleaner. Unbelievably enough, there were even lines etched into the metal of the Pflueger spool where fishing line was wrapped around it!
What can I say about the Penn spool? The fact that Peerless No. 9's were discontinued in the 70's makes the spool look even better!
Granted, I don't know the stories behind these spools. Maybe the Penn was only used a couple of times while the Pflueger was used every day. If that's the case, the user should have known the dangers of salt water and acted accordingly.
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
