Antique tackle addresses

December 11th 2008 00:47
I'm not really into antique tackle although I've mentioned old rods and reels from time to time.

For those of you who are into collecting or just seeing what that stuff in the attic is worth, here are a couple of links you may want to check out.

One thing that makes me mad is when you get anglers together they always start talking about stuff the average person can't understand!

If you're new to angling, it can be pretty frustrating.

Some helpful tips for baitcasters

October 2nd 2008 00:14
Some anglers are a little put off by the difficulties encountered when using baitcasting reels.

I use a baitcaster about 60% of the time and LOVE it! Granted, it's a pretty expensive reel that a couple family members went together on and gave me as a Christmas gift. Recently, I bought a cheaper baitcaster and was less enchanted. None the less, a baitcaster is better when you want to use heavy line, certain applications, or big fish are expected. More importantly, the accuracy achieved with a baitcaster is incredible!

Pulling loops from your spinning reel

September 26th 2008 00:18
I thought this tip was too common sense to even mention until I saw this video on YouTube. (Goes to show what I know!)

Here's a way to get those loops out of your spinning reel.

A video about Alvey reels

September 11th 2008 00:41
Here's a video you may enjoy.

Alvey reels are made in Australia. I first became aware of them about five years ago when I saw one at a flea market. I wasn't sure what I was looking at and though it was an antique fly reel. It wasn't until I found this video that I truly knew what I had found and how to use it.

Fifty cent reels and a Ryobi update

September 7th 2008 00:55
The only thing better than getting eight reels for four dollars is getting TEN reels for four dollars! That's what I did the other night at the flea market but two of the lot were unsalvageable so, now I have eight reels.

More about line spooling

August 4th 2008 00:16
This post sort of goes along with yesterday's post about spooling line on your reel.

As I said yesterday, if you crank line onto you spinning reel as this product invites or the way it was described in the YouTube video, problems are sure to result!

How to put line on a reel

A reel for you!

May 8th 2008 23:10
I'm not sure about the validity of this thing but, I just found it as I was trying out some new speakers for my computer.

This proves you can get tangles with a spinning reel. I KNOW I'm supposed to say a spinning reel is easier to use than a baitcaster but I have a REAL nice baitcaster I got as a gift and I'll put it up against a LOT of spining reels I see.

A great reel at a great price

May 8th 2008 00:52
Although fishing is a relatively cheap hobby, you can spend quite a sum of money if you're not careful. You go into a tackle shop, start picking up five or ten dollar items and, before you know it, you've spent as much money as the budget allows for the whole month!

If you're in need of a reel, it would behoove any angler to consider the Daiwa Magaforce baitcaster.

Be honest and think about the last time you really considered the drag on your reel. Don't get me wrong because I'm just as guilty as the next guy but, it illustrates the point that the drag on your reel is an often overlooked element of the fishing equation that we can control.

The drag on a reel allows the angler to set a pressure limit that is applied to his or her line. The spool holds tight for a while but, when that predetermined limit is achieved, the line slowly peels off, exhausting the fish.

Reel maintenance

March 18th 2008 00:32
It makes little difference if you have a spinning, bait casting, or spincasting reel, keeping your reel clean and well lubricated is not only important to your fishing but also insures the life of your reel. The off-season is a perfect time to service your reel. If you’re not mechanically inclined, you can have this done at your local tackle shop for a few dollars. However, with a little effort, you can do the work and not only save yourself a few bucks, but also fill up some time on a boring afternoon.

The exact tools you will need vary according to the reel you have but it’s safe to say that all you need are a couple of small screwdrivers, a small brush, some good grease and oil, cotton swabs, and a place to work.

Zebco--bombs to bass

November 13th 2007 02:35
Zebco 33

It’s ironic that in a sport like fishing where two of the watchwords are “peace” and “serenity” one of the biggest players in the industry once had the name Zero Hour Bomb Company. Like so many single product companies of the late 40's, they were looking to produce something besides the oil drilling explosives they were known for. That’s when a watch maker by the name of R.D. Hull, approached the company with a newly designed fishing reel.

Choosing a fishing reel

In the last post we talked about picking out a rod. A rod without a reel is useless so we’ll get right to it and help you choose a reel.

Yer mighty fast pardner!

June 29th 2007 01:27
This is one of the nerdy things you MAY need to know. It can come handy if you go to buy fishing equipment!
fishing reel, selection, speed, equipment
Your reel may look something like this...
We're going to be talking about reels but you can get all that stuff about brands, spinning vs. casting, and the like out of your head. We're going to get REAL (or REEL) basic and talk about some of those numbers that are driving you crazy. You know--what's a 3.2 reel as opposed to a 7-1?
spinning reel
...or like this one
To make a long story short, those numbers tell you how many times the spool (where the line actually is) turns when you crank the handle. The spool of that 7-1 reel turns 7 times while the spool of a 3.2-1 reel turns a little over three times. (I hope that makes sense! If it doesn't, gimme a shout!)

What? Baitcast--spin???????

June 13th 2007 19:49
If someone gives you a rod, you may have to get yourself a reel and you definitely will need to know the difference between a spinning rod and a baitcasting rod and then you get the reel accordingly. Sounds simple enough. BUT! If you get out there very much, any fisherman(person) ought to know the difference.

A spinning rod usually has bigger guides (those circle things the line goes through) and the reel goes on the under side of the rod. A baitcaster is the opposite in these respects--the guides are smaller and the reel goes on the top as you might expect. However, something else sets these rods apart. The bait casting rod will have a small trigger, or nook for you finger, right in front of the handle. This really aids in getting a grip on the thing and whipping it around when casting. The picture may help
