Looking at rock bass
November 4th 2011 14:24
How many times have you heard "...there was a lot of big blue gill."
Look again. They may have been rock bass.
Look again. They may have been rock bass.
Also known as rock perch or google eyes, Rock bass are similar in appearance to smallmouth bass but are usually quite a bit smaller, often only 6-10 inches long but the largest is reported to have been 17 inches or 43 cm. and they usually weigh under a pound.
Generally speaking, rock bass prefer clear, rocky, and vegetated stream pools and are fairly well unaffected by the presence of people. In fact, you can often find then around boat docks and along shore lines.
When it comes to fishing for rock bass, they often make their presence felt when you're after something else. (As is too often the case with many species!) This is because they bite on several baits such as small lures, night crawlers, or even small minnows. Rock bass won't be such of a challenge if you hook up with one on bass gear but, if you're targeting them, try light gear and light line for a real challenge.
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
