Fishing rods vs. Fishing poles

If you've read much American literature, you know about the lazy days spent by Huckleberry Finn as he relaxed down by the fishin' hole with a stick for a rod and piece of line tied to the end.
Part of that image persists even today when it comes to make the distinction between "fishing RODS" and "fishing POLES."
When it comes to determining if you're looking at a fishing rod or pole, think in other terms. What is a rod? Would you say a skinny stick around 4-9 feet? That pretty well defines a fishing rod. Add a feel to the equation and you have a rod and reel combo.
Fishing POLES, on the other hand, are fairly common is England and other areas where carp are the dominant species. With a pole, as Huck did, you simply tie a piece of line to the end of the pole and swing it over the water.
Holding a pole with a piece of line over the water may sound a little primitive. Some may even ask, "How do you get the line out there?" A fishing POLE is pretty darned long--even up to 40 feet. Sound far fetched? That's what I thought until I saw the following video...
