Evolution in progress

January 3rd 2012 19:16
blacktip shark and divers

Are we witnessing evolution? Maybe so.

Blacktip sharks and Australian Blacktips are mating and their off springs are showing up in Australia waters. Scientists have not found just one or two examples of this strange mating but 57!

You can look at it this way--it's not uncommon to find something off center in nature now and then, but 57??????

Here's a brief report that's been popping up on the Net today.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!

Orca vs. shark

January 1st 2012 03:45
Here's a video that was on my browser this morning depicting killer whales attacking sharks.

That in itself is pretty cool but when a dog gets into the act, the gloves come off.

New Year's Jaws Marathon

December 29th 2011 23:34
For many of us, New Year's day is a day of football but you can start the festivities early this year because Spike TV is running its Jaws Marathon starting starting New Year's Eve starting at 9 A.M. with Jaws 4-Jaws the Revenge. There's not a lot that can be said about the fourth and final offering of the Jaws series. When the movie came out in 1987, the general response was, "Yuck!"

Jaws movie still
Fortunately, the other movies in the series will also be on tap with the original being shown in back to back presentations starting at 7:06 pm.

An 881 pound mistake

November 23rd 2011 03:00
I guess having the right fishing license is more important than one might think.

Here's a story that's been making the rounds today that proves the point!

The end of the line??

August 25th 2011 20:18
Admittedly, the question marks were added by yours truly. Discounting this liberty, The End of the Line is a film which takes a sobering look at the effects of overfishing and offers solutions that may save our population.

The Rupert Murray film, based on British environmental journalist Charles Clover's book, shows the devastating effects that overfishing with modern technology is having on our oceans by using both under and above-water footage to show we are taking fish from the ocean faster than they can be replaced.

Shark Week begins July 31

July 13th 2011 14:38
You can always tell it's summer in the U.S. by three things--the 4th of July, the MLB All-Star Game, and Discovery Channel's Shark Week.

Two of these events have passed but the third, Discovery Channel's Shark Week will begin July 31 at 9 p.m.

It sounds like cartoons

If someone wants to talk about weird fish, I'm always in the audience.

When I heard about a fish with a see through head I had my doubts until I read this report.

This post is related to what I was talking about yesterday.

Worries about the illegal trade of shark fins and sea cucumbers has resulted in banning the trade of both products in the Marshall islands.

California shark fin ban

Notice a lack of fins?

Although it goes against centuries of tradition and will, undoubtedly infuriate countless people, the U.S. state of California is introducing a bill to ban the sale and possession of shark fins, including the serving of shark’s fin soup.

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of shark fin soup although I've never had the opportunity to try it.

The gray areas of life and fishing

January 7th 2011 03:38
Looking for facts to back up my theories, has taught me one thing--when it comes to angling, there are a LOT of opinions floating around out there. That idea was driven home when I ran across this article when I was, as is often the case, looking for other information.

Although the article mentions a debate raging among shark harvesters, the real message is that, too often, policy aimed at fisheries, is determined by, at the best, tainted information because proper studies may not be conducted.

Arizona sharks?

December 27th 2010 01:37
No, this isn't about a new sports franchise sprouting up in Arizona.

A shark and peacock bass have been introduced into the canals of Yuma, Arizona. Both are non-native to the area and the discovery is under investigation.

When it comes to sharks, most people are familiar with great whites, bulls, tiger sharks, and maybe makos and white tips, but there's a BIG three not everyone is familiar with.

Now, when I say "Big three" I'm not talking about maneaters. I mean BIG sharks! The big three are the whale shark, basking sharks, and the ferocious sounding megamouth.

Part of Gulf closed to shrimping

November 28th 2010 01:32
Some would say it's an example of damage control, closing the barn door after the horse gets out or, even what should have been done earlier.

What ever way you want to look at it, part of the gulf of Mexico had been closed to commercial shrimping after tar balls were discovered. This action comes after the waters were deemed "safe" be the federal government. This action reverses that decision and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has closed over4,000 square miles of the Gulf off Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

More BP fallout

November 26th 2010 00:46
Will we ever hear the end of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

Although the spill itself was capped weeks ago there is still dispute. For instance, federal officials have pronounce seafood from the Gulf safe for human consumption. However, residents and experts dispute that claim.

Give kite fishing a try!

November 17th 2010 02:46
kite fishing
Like any fishing, one of the keys to surf fishing is getting to where the fish are. That often means super long casts to get beyond breaking waves. If you have a sore arm or are just feeling tired, why not try a kite?

Kite Fishing is a technique of fishing that involves flying kites, and using the kites to suspend live baits on the top of the water. Charter fishing boats have been using a long time to hook up with some of the species that swim in the sea.

The reality of basking sharks

October 17th 2010 00:52
basking shark

Basking is usually thought of as exposing yourself to pleasant warmth, usually the sun. So, I didn't think it was much of a stretch to figure basking sharks are the usual, run of the mill sharks, swimming near the surface, catching some rays.
