Angling Fish - by James Rickard

Surf fishing for sharks

October 13th 2008 02:18
Here's a short documentary I found on YouTube about shark hunting.

This is pretty cool because instead of fishing from a boat, these guys are fishing from the beach and risk their lives with every effort since they have to take the bait to the sharks via surf board!

For all you movie buffs, the truck they use reminds me of the rig used by John Wayne in Hatari.

Although it's not explained, this must be for some type of research because the sharks are tagged and then released.

Lastly, in order to truly appreciate what fish hooks are, I think everyone should take notice of the hook they are using!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Tuna, tuna, tuna

August 28th 2008 00:39
Yesterday's leftover tuna salad for breakfast, tuna melts for lunch and then, tuna casserole for dinner. Before you know it, tuna is an all day thing. Aside from the fact that you can make a lot of meals from a can of tuna, people often fail to realize this is a "big league" fish that most of us can catch.

These guys certainly landed a big one!
To hook this ocean dweller, you don't necessarily need to charter a boat which may cost hundreds of dollars a day! Nor does it always require behemoth strength. Although tuna weighing in excess of 1,000 pounds have been recorded, most people are familiar with varieties that weigh around 40 pounds (19 Kg.) but, some weigh in at only around 8 pounds (3-4 Kg.) Additionally, tuna are found all over the world except for Polar regions at up to around 1,600 feet (500 meters.)

Patagonian Toothfish

June 1st 2008 00:41
You may think the name Patagonia Toothfish sounds catooonish and made-up but, there really is such a fish.

Patagonia is a region in Southern South America. There are several varieties of the fish itself and its found in deep waters of Southern Chile, the Falkland Islands, and throughout areas of the Indian Ocean. Australia also supports a thriving toothfish industry around Heard and McDonald Island in the Southern Indian Ocean. Chief markets for toothfish are the U.S. where it is known as Chilean Sea Bass and Japan where it is known as "mero."

71 shark attacks in 2007

March 13th 2008 02:28
Numbers are in and there were 71 shark attacks in 2007. If you're among the unlucky 71, your odds of living are over 90 percent. In fact, shark-attack fatalities are at an all-time low.

The thing is---scientists won't say that if you are bitten by a shark, it hurts so bad that you WANT to die!

Shark tournaments--yea or nay?

February 15th 2008 04:51
I'm not too proud to say that there are some aspects of fishing that escape me. Shark fishing is one topic I study and think about but you don't find many sharks in Pennsylvania waters.

Shark tournaments are one thing I've thought about quite a bit. As a whole, the idea sounds kind of barbaric but I'm not in a real position to know so I don't dwell on that idea too much. Not having sharks around sort of makes my sounding off like the guy in the desert with an opinion about logging. It's easy to form an opinion if all you do is READ about it.

62 shark attacks in 2006

December 19th 2007 05:48
shark
It must be official. According to an article in the Baltimore Sun there were 62 unprovoked shark attacks around the world in 2006.

I always like that term--UNPROVOKED. What constitutes provoking a shark??? Better still, is anyone out there stupid enough to tease a shark?????

Sharks--demons or misunderstood

November 5th 2007 23:40
shark

All you have to do is shout, “Shark” when you’re at the beach and mayhem ensues. Why is that? In reality, sharks are nothing like the savage killing machines portrayed on the silver screen. Misunderstandings perpetrated by the movies of decades past still persist until shark attacks have become one of the most feared natural dangers surpassing hurricanes and even other wild animals.

Cod--the world fish

September 26th 2007 20:49
fishing boat
I thought about discussing cod but, decided to hold off because there’s a book on Amazon.com entitled, “Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World” and I thought too many people would think I was simply regurgitating what I had read. BUT, when someone asked me, “What about cod?” I figured the time is right and everything is saying, “Do it!”

Before we get too far into this, kudos have to go to the author, Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky also penned “Salt: A World History.” His ability to take such mundane subjects and spin a good yarn is just uncanny
