Scientists have discovered a 380 million year old fossil showing an unborn embryo and umbilical cord. This exemplifies a fish that would have given birth to live young which is known as viviparity. So far, this unique find is BIG news in the scientific community because it pushes back the dating of live births almost 200 million years.
Another reason for interest is the fact that producing live young is an advanced form of reproduction often associated with mammals and this form of viviparity is comparable to the reproduction in sharks and rays. At any rate, it's a far cry from the egg laying of reptiles!
