Shark watch for surfers in S.F.
November 2nd 2011 15:47
This blog doesn't usually follow surfing competitions but when surfers in San Francisco had a shark scare it was all too similar to the recent terror in Australia.
Spotting sharks off the California cost is nothing new as there are, unbelievably, over 30 species paroling the coast including, tiger sharks, nurse sharks, ragged tooths, bulls, and blues, but these were Great Whites which were in the area to enjoy seals.
Fortunately, nobody was attacked but a Hawaiian surfer was forced from the water and the competition area was under patrol by lifeguards and rangers.
This competition, called ASP World Tour, is the first of its kind for the area. Despite this, one has to question the wisdom of having competitions such as this in an area harboring any sharks let alone the mammoth Great White.
Just like the movie JAWS, you can to look at it this way--"Sharks? Eh, there's money to be made!"
You can read more about it here.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
