Shark Fin Soup Boycott

August 23rd 2010 03:42
The cruelty of shark fin soup has been realized by at least one Hong Kong couple who recently neglected to include the dish in their wedding menu.

shark finning
In many instances fins alone are removed from sharks and they are then thrown back into the water to drown while the fins are sold as a delicacy supposedly to boost sexual potency, prevent heart disease and cholesterol, or enhance skin quality.

The action of this Chinese couple goes against centuries of tradition but, it may help save the world's dwindling supply of sharks.

You can read the whole story here.

Bull sharks in India

June 24th 2010 00:40
Here's a fairly cool video I got the other day from NatGeo.

The vid follows a study on shark attacks in Indian rivers which results in, (duh!) bull sharks.

Sharks in the Ohio River

May 14th 2010 05:40
It hardly made news like the excitement when a shark terrorized Amity, however, a shark has washed up here in the U.S. in, of all places, the Ohio River. It gets even better--it happened in Pulaski, Illinois.

I'll admit, I had to get the map out for this so don't feel bad for saying, "Where?" It's late and I'm tired so, I can't wrap my mind around turning the map I found into a jpeg. Suffice to say, Pulaski is almost as far south as you can get in Illinois and is WAY south of Chicago! And yet it's North of where I live so, go figure!

Dog and shark

March 24th 2010 01:35
If you've ever had a dog, you've probably experienced the heady feeling of the animal presenting a dead carcass at your feet. It's usually something like a rabbit or something long those lines.

Here's something you don't see every day--a dog dragging a shark ashore!

Shark stories are a dime a dozen these days--especially in Australia!

Fishing in a kayak

February 3rd 2010 02:34
Although I have several irons in the fire right now, I'm also giving considerable consideration to purchasing a kayak.

Frequent readers to this blog will know I don't have a boat or even want one.

Will we ever see Jaws 5?

November 15th 2009 01:58
Jaws 5 poster
If fishing isn't your way to pass the time, a movie may be just the thing. If that's the case, you can combine the two with Jaws.

Most people know the story of Jaws--a great white shark terrorizes a beach at Martha's Vineyard. Unfortunately, Jaws also spawned three sequels--none equaling the compelling qualities of the first film.

Another coldwater shark

October 6th 2009 00:28
I talked about the Salmon Shark a while back but discovered another shark that makes its home in cold waters. This time we'll meet the Greenland Shark.

You can find the Greenland Shark around Greenland (naturally) in addition to North Atlantic Polar regions and very occasionally as far south as the Gulf of Mexico. More readily though, one may turn up in the St. Lawrence River or Gulf or Maine.

Tidal rivers

urban fishing

I've noticed a lot of information on bull sharks can be found on television lately. This post ISN'T going to be about bull sharks. Instead, I want to devote a paragraph or two to where you sometimes find the bull shark--in tidal rivers. Exactly what is a tidal river?

I've been able to catch some of Discovery's Shark Week and heard something interesting the other day.

I tuned in late so I don't know if the person on screen was a researcher, diver, or just someone with an avid interest but he was talking about "shark finning." That's the practice of catching sharks, cutting off all their fins for soup, and then, throwing the still living shark back into the water to drown.

Salmon shark--Alaska's own

April 8th 2009 01:17
When it comes to sharks, you think of places like, Hawaii, Australia, and, thanks to "Jaws", Martha's Vineyard. However, not all sharks frequent these tourist meccas. If you're thinking this is the case, meet the Salmon Shark named for the Alaskan treat on which they feast.

Although you may think of sharks as warm water creatures, the Salmon Shark is found in icy waters off Western North America, Iceland, Newfoundland, the Bering Sea, and even European locations such as England or Scotland and regions of the North Atlantic as well as corresponding latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere.

More weird fish--the Frill Shark

December 9th 2008 21:28
Here's some info about a weird shark I saw on TV the other night. I don't know why it took so long for me to hear about it because this animal, the Frill Shark, was spotted back in January of 2007.

With the head of a shark and body of a serpent, the nearly five and a half foot (160 cm.) animal was spotted by fishermen off the coast of Japan and transferred to a marine park where it lived for a few hours before expiring.

Surf fishing for sharks

October 13th 2008 02:18
Here's a short documentary I found on YouTube about shark hunting.

This is pretty cool because instead of fishing from a boat, these guys are fishing from the beach and risk their lives with every effort since they have to take the bait to the sharks via surf board!
