Salmon shark--Alaska's own

April 8th 2009 01:17
When it comes to sharks, you think of places like, Hawaii, Australia, and, thanks to "Jaws", Martha's Vineyard. However, not all sharks frequent these tourist meccas. If you're thinking this is the case, meet the Salmon Shark named for the Alaskan treat on which they feast.

Although you may think of sharks as warm water creatures, the Salmon Shark is found in icy waters off Western North America, Iceland, Newfoundland, the Bering Sea, and even European locations such as England or Scotland and regions of the North Atlantic as well as corresponding latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere.

The possibility exists that you've heard of the Salmon Shark by one of the other common names it may possess. Depending on the part of the world you find the creatures, they may be called the Bluedog, Porbeagle, Mackerel Shark or Bonito Shark.

Although it may look like a Great White, this is a salmon shark.

Salmon Sharks usually have a dark gray back, dark patches on their sides and a white underside along with longer than normal gill slits and the usual black eyes associated with sharks. Although studies are incomplete, it's estimated that Salmons can grow to around 10 feet or around 3 meters with 6.5 to 8 feet being the average and can be found down to depths of just under 500 feet. My handy converter says that come out to around 152 meters so, if you want to do any studies at this depth, feel free!

Unlike most other sharks, human interaction with the Salmon Shark is fairly low. Despite this, always remember the Salmon is an apex predator and can swim as fast as a Mako while reaching sizes to equal to or better than any human.

Despite their predatory nature, Salmon Sharks are considered more of a pest to fishermen than a threat to human beings because they often damage nets and steal fish in a effort to gobble up the very fish humans are stalking for their livelihood

AND since this is a fishing blog, we'll warn you to not bother going after Salmon Sharks with line less than 80-pound test and a good, steel leader! Spoons work for bait but, make it easy on yourself and use salmon, squid, or herring along with a rod and tackle heavy enough to handle sharks.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!

Did you know they've discovered that FAST turtles escape sharks more often than SLOW turtles???

Evidently, it's news to the people at National Geographic!

More weird fish--the Frill Shark

December 9th 2008 21:28
Here's some info about a weird shark I saw on TV the other night. I don't know why it took so long for me to hear about it because this animal, the Frill Shark, was spotted back in January of 2007.

With the head of a shark and body of a serpent, the nearly five and a half foot (160 cm.) animal was spotted by fishermen off the coast of Japan and transferred to a marine park where it lived for a few hours before expiring.

Surf fishing for sharks

October 13th 2008 02:18
Here's a short documentary I found on YouTube about shark hunting.

This is pretty cool because instead of fishing from a boat, these guys are fishing from the beach and risk their lives with every effort since they have to take the bait to the sharks via surf board!

71 shark attacks in 2007

March 13th 2008 02:28
Numbers are in and there were 71 shark attacks in 2007. If you're among the unlucky 71, your odds of living are over 90 percent. In fact, shark-attack fatalities are at an all-time low.

The thing is---scientists won't say that if you are bitten by a shark, it hurts so bad that you WANT to die!

Shark tournaments--yea or nay?

February 15th 2008 04:51
I'm not too proud to say that there are some aspects of fishing that escape me. Shark fishing is one topic I study and think about but you don't find many sharks in Pennsylvania waters.

Shark tournaments are one thing I've thought about quite a bit. As a whole, the idea sounds kind of barbaric but I'm not in a real position to know so I don't dwell on that idea too much. Not having sharks around sort of makes my sounding off like the guy in the desert with an opinion about logging. It's easy to form an opinion if all you do is READ about it.

62 shark attacks in 2006

December 19th 2007 05:48
shark
It must be official. According to an article in the Baltimore Sun there were 62 unprovoked shark attacks around the world in 2006.

I always like that term--UNPROVOKED. What constitutes provoking a shark??? Better still, is anyone out there stupid enough to tease a shark?????

Sharks--demons or misunderstood

November 5th 2007 23:40
shark

All you have to do is shout, “Shark” when you’re at the beach and mayhem ensues. Why is that? In reality, sharks are nothing like the savage killing machines portrayed on the silver screen. Misunderstandings perpetrated by the movies of decades past still persist until shark attacks have become one of the most feared natural dangers surpassing hurricanes and even other wild animals.
