Weekend tip--Buy softplastics in bulk
December 8th 2007 03:56
Anglers are an industrious lot. Some say, "CHEAP." I prefer the term "FRUGAL."
A tempting offer you often see, especially in the off season, is umpteen softplastic baits by some company you've never heard of!
I'm here to say that I bit on one of these deals and almost lived to regret it. The lures smelled so "rubbery"-- like their packaging-- that they nearly repulsed me to say nothing of any potential fish! Happily, I got around the offensive odor and ended up being able to use the baits.
I don't know how I thought of this but, the first thing I did was dump them into a pan of water and boil them for half an hour. Be especially careful the first few minutes because the fumes are very strong--so strong if fact that they made my eyes water!
Be careful when you take them out of the water because they will be very pliable and you can ruin their molding. Blot them off and dump all of them into a container and cover the entire lot with garlic powder. Cover the container and about a month later the lures should be good to use and you won't notice that "rubbery" smell!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
