Giant stingrays

November 20th 2008 02:51
South Eastern Asia must be a haven for big, exotic fish. Not only are giant catfish found, scientist have even found giant sting rays.

Here's a giant catfish that came out of Cambodia back in 2005.

Catfish aren't all you find! This specimen came from Thailand.
Giant stingrays are similar in appearance to rays you usually find and have brownish tint. The biggest difference is that they live up to their name and grow to over 16 feet long which comes out to around 5 meters and weigh well over 1,300 pounds or 600 kilos! Many people know the stingray has a stinging barb on its tail. On the giant stingray, this barb can be 15 inches long. That works out to around 38 centimeters!

This is a giant stingray that is less than an hour old, the offspring of the giant in the other photograph.
Although giant stingrays are found in South East Asia, Borneo, Thailand, New Guinea, and northern Australia, not a lot is known about the creatures because, as incredible as it may sound, they weren't discovered until 1990. This much is known, their numbers are dwindling as their habitats are degraded.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

I have trouble with the idea of RIVERS. I can sort of accept stuff like this in the sea because it's so deep and unexplored but rivers??? AND where was that stingray hiding out not to be found until 1990??????

If you saw the Mekong river, you'd see that it is indeed possible for fish to obtain the size pictured James. Now, many fishermen keep their catch alive, because government sponsored officials buy them for breeding stock.

Here's a Thai link.

These are incredible, aren't they? If I hadn't found them on National Geographic I would have had my doubts!
