Structure & cover

Structure and cover. Two little words that mean a LOT to anglers. Unfortunately, they are also often misunderstood. Fishing programs or articles usually start off with the right examples but, by the time the examples get out among the masses, things fall apart. Structure is the physical characteristics of a body of water. Examples would be reefs or points. If you're exploring with a depth finder, structure can be areas where there are differences in the depth or contours along the bottom. In fact, the bottom of a body of water is structure regardless if it's rock, sand, or any combination.
When you're using that depth finder, you may find a hump which is a shallow area surrounded by deeper water. Humps are often looked at as underwater islands. A hole is simply the opposite of a hump. It's a deep pocket (hence "hole") in the bottom surrounded by shallow water. It's in these holes that you often find bottom dwellers like catfish.
You can consider cover to be an "added feature." Cover provides shelter or a place to hide. BUT it also provides predators with ambush areas. Cover can be various vegetation, docks, rock piles, either fallen or standing timber, or even something tossed into the lake or river. In short, if something is in the water and it's not natural, and won't be there if you drain off the water, it's probably cover of one type or another.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!
