Success when fishing

Finding the fish is the first step to successful fishing and many anglers include a thermometer and depth finders in their fishing tackle. Considering this, it's no wonder it's so hard to duplicate the success of others using the very same lures. While this can be true of artificial lures, time, temperature, etc. must be considered even when using live bait! . To this end, knowing if was morning, afternoon or even mid-day is imperative since fish often prefer different baits fat different times of the day.
While there's nothing wrong with following the advice of another angler, you have to consider the other person's success rate because they may spend more time fishing than they do catching.
Over time, everyone is going to catch something if they fish long enough. Call it luck—persistence—whatever! However, the right tackles can and will result in your being able to catch more than a cold.
Exactly what is the right tackle? At the risk of sounding like I'm copping out, I honestly believe that depends on where you are and what you're after.
Sure, you want fish. But, what kind of fish? Many people begin their fishing with night crawlers. In the river where I fish, I've had miserable luck with "crawlers!" Minnows have been my bait of choice for local fishing for many years. Conversely, I've tried minnows in other areas and struck out. After that, there insects plus a lot cut baits and even things from the refrigerator I'm not going to go into because they are too off the wall and too specialized.
After trying live baits, a taste of success prods several anglers, (myself included) to try artificial lures. This is where it gets dicey!
Everybody talks about the "best" or one that's going to do it all. It's not that simple when it comes to buying lures. You have to figure any lure on the market has caught a fish or two at one time or another. The important thing to remember when it comes to lures is that their success rate depends on many factors—weather, temperature, season, time of day, and the most uncanny factor of all; fish preference. Just about any fish will bite a lure that looks like living prey. Conversely, trout, pike or saltwater fish often hit on shiny metal lures.
With the right bait, fishing can be a pretty cool activity. With the wrong bait, you find out why it's called "fishing" and not "catching."
