Taking care of simple wounds

I'm one of those Murphy's Law kind of guys and figure, "Whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong! "
Although it's been quite a while since I hooked myself, when it comes to cuts, scrapes, abrasions, stings, or sunburn during fishing, I could write a book!
One of the most painful injuries I can think of is getting stabbed with the fins of pan fish!
Sunnies, crappie; you name it. The fish may be no bigger than your hand but they can put a world of hurt on you if they spread that dorsal fin!

I don't want to sound like a fuddy duddy but one thing I ALWAYS have when I go out is a basic first-aid kit. This doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Some band-aids, iodine, alcohol wipes, antiseptic cream, and peroxide take care of MOST boo-boos you get
If a fish "fins" you, it may not hurt right then but, you certainly know you're injured the next day because, even though I'm no scientist, I can almost guarantee some infection or swelling around the location where the fins did their dirty work!
To combat this, as soon as it happens, give the injury a little squeeze. This is especially imperative if you get "finned!" When you're out fishing, who knows WHAT germs are in the water and squeezing a wound may lead to a little bleeding but it gets the funky water out of the wound and any crud left behind by the fish's fins.
After you squeeze the wound, grab your first-aid kit and pour some peroxide on the affected area. Let things foam a few seconds and then, give it another squeeze followed by more peroxide. If you have any peroxide left, a third squeeze never hurts.
After all that, bathe the area in alcohol and cover it with a band-aid. That should take
care of you until you get home!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
