The best time to fish

March 3rd 2008 02:50
Everybody is always asking, “When’s the best time to fish?” There’s a lot of answers to that question but timing plays a BIG part! Knowing how fish think and operate go a long way in determining the best times to fish.

When it's warm and sunny, fish are usually going to move to cooler, deeper waters to stay comfortable. Contrary to what some people say, cloudy days are usually good days to fish because the clouds diffuse the sunlight.

Listen to the forecast on TV or radio. The morning sun warms shallow waters, which creates comfortable water temperatures for fish and makes them more active. Late morning is a great time to take advantage of this.

In the early morning or late afternoon, cooler temperatures and lower light levels allow fish to lurk in the shallows for meals.

It never hurts to watch weather patterns. Warm fronts cause surface temperatures to increase, which will encourage fish to feed on or near the surface. Unfortunately fishing is usually slow during and after a cold front.

Fishing during a light rain is often successful because the fish have a harder time seeing through the surface. Rain also washes insects and bait into the water, creating a feeding frenzy for the fish.
Check daily tide reports if you're into saltwater fishing. The best conditions are usually not long after high tide and shortly before.

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Haven't been fishing for a looooong while.

Used to catch a lot of blue bone groper up north west when we lived up that way. Mostly with a hand line (of all things).

Always wondered when the best time actually was. Come to think of it I thinkwe had the best luck around high tide (problem was our special rock was under water then!!)

Dude!! That hand line stuff is hard core! I think high tide is a good time. Even if you don't catch anything you can go for a dip!!!!

I don't know about taking a dip... where the fish are, aren't the sharks close behind?

Well there you go. I've always thought that to fish you had to be out at the crack of dawn. Made me wonder what the fish are doing for the rest of the day if the only time of day you could catch them was early in the morning!

KylieW,

That's a myth!!! (almost) You can get the early feeders but they did a study and found out the the majority of fish are taken around 8-2. AND a REAL good number 2-8--something like 20%. That's good news because I'm not a morning man but I really like night fishing!

For anyone reading this--
One warm day after winter does NOT mean you can go fishing in your favorite spot!

I like to fish right as it gets dark or right when the sun comes up, partly due to my intense hatred of hot weather. I mostly catfish now days and that is more night time fishing than day.

Randy,

I'm doing the cat thing this summer also. It works out well because I'm not and early morning person. AND even a little cat fights like crazy!

My 12 year old son caught his first cat a few weeks ago. Fishing with a night crawler in the day time. 18 inch cat. Not bad for a first catfish. All he had caught before were Bream.
