Tidal rivers

I've noticed a lot of information on bull sharks can be found on television lately. This post ISN'T going to be about bull sharks. Instead, I want to devote a paragraph or two to where you sometimes find the bull shark--in tidal rivers. Exactly what is a tidal river?
Tidal rivers are rivers directly influenced by ocean tides and their water levels rise and fall in relation to the tide. What some people fail to realize, is that water levels change at different times. In fact, if you are fishing at a particular depth and want to remain at that depth, rather than to spool out more line, you can jump in your boat and go upstream and stay ahead of the rising waters. Another advantage to this is the fact that the rising waters may bring different species of fish.
It's important to realize not all rivers are tidal rivers. Rivers that are far inland or have several dams are seldom influenced by sea activity. None the less, you may see water levels rise and fall. This is usually because of water being controlled by the dam.

The fish you catch can vary from river to river and even parts of the same river, this particular attribute can be attractive to some anglers because it's not that uncommon for a group of fish to wander off and set up housekeeping ina different area from the main group.
Always consider, no matter how much you may know about a particular stretch of river, conditions such as currents, cover, and even species can be different just a few hundred yards away. This may be an attractive feature but, always remember, if you're fond of ice fishing, rivers are not for you!
Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
