Angling Fish - by James Rickard

It's hard to talk about flipping without mentioning pitching. It seems as if you do one, you almost invariably do the other!

Here's a really good video from YouTube featuring professional angler Timmy Horton explaining both techniques in just a few words.

You may feel a little self conscious using these techniques when everyone is casting something like a mile into the water but anyone who knows anything about fishing will know what you're doing and appreciate your efforts.

If you ask WHY you ought to know this, it's simple. This is a good technique for any BIG fish like carp or bass that may suspend close to shore or cover and you don't want to spook the fish. It will allow you to softly place your bait, with precision, right in front of its nose!

It you look closely at the video, you'll notice that Tim is using a baitcasting reel but, it works just as well with a spinning outfit. The main thing to remember is that it works BEST with a rod that is around 7 feet or longer and your best bet is probably a medium heavy rod. Personally, I like a 6 foot rod but, like I always say, fishing is full of compromises!

If you fish for catfish using chicken liver but go crazy because the livers tear up and don't stay hooked during casts, this is a technique to combat that problem!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

More pros in the Anglers' Corner

February 11th 2008 05:29
Since it's February and tournament action begins in less than two weeks, there are some more professionals I want to profile before the competition begins. Of course, every year there's some Cinderella Kid who comes out of nowhere and garners all the attention the sport has to offer! With my luck, that will happen again this year and all the people I've mentioned on here won't even finish in the Top-50!

Dean Rojas
Dean Rojas
Dean Rojas is an angler we could ALL learn from! One of his primary strengths is sight fishing which is simply watching shallow swimming fish and then observing as they come up and take the bait. I LOVE doing that and I think it's an easy way to learn about fish species and what you do to affect the bite.

Hangin' out in the Anglers' Corner

You look at anglers who are on tour right now, learn a little bit about them and sometimes you can understand how they ended up on the cast for cash circuit. SOMETIMES...

Larry Nixon
Larry Nixon
Pro angler Larry Nixon definitely fits the mold. Before turning pro he was a fishing guide. Back in 1977 Nixon joined the tournament trail and began one of the most successful fishing careers around. Since that time, Larry has won two Angler of the Year titles, 14 tournaments, fished in 23 Bassmaster Classics in addition to winning the Classic in 1983.

A family in the Anglers' Corner

The old saying "The family that plays together, stays together" really applies to the Mize family. Not only do you find Mom and Dad, Lucy and Jimmy, on the professional tour, their children, Melinda and Matt also followed their steps and entered the cast for cash circuit.

There's an obvious question here. Have they competed against each other? Certainly. Although, you'd have to think it makes for "interesting" conversation at the dinner table!

2007 Angler of the Year--Skeet Reese

Fishing is usually like chess--more fun to do than watch, but the way the 2007 Bassmaster tournament trail played out made us remember it's still a sport!

Family rivalry in the Anglers' Corner

January 14th 2008 03:59
There aren't very many sports that allow a father and son to go head to head in competition but fishing is one of them. Denny and Chad Brauer are two anglers who are able to teach us a thing or two!

The elder Brauer, Denny, began professional competition back in 1980. Since that time, he's achieved over a dozen first place finishes, been named Angler of the Year and won the Bassmaster Classic in 1998.

Baseball, cricket, or football: name the sport and it's probably going to take a few players to accumulate 60 years of experience.

On the other hand, there are two anglers on the professional tour who have 60 years of experience between them. Rick Clunn and Zell Rowland have probably forgotten more about fishing than most of us will ever know!

Ish Monroe
It's not every day that you use COOL and FISHING in the same sentence. Then again, it's not every day that you meet an angler like Ish Monroe.

Ish is short for "Ishama." That's how he signs his checks. "Shama" to his parents and "Ish" to anyone else. Ish is cool and Ish has style--two qualities professional angling needs to cross into the mainstream.

A trio in the anglers' corner

December 24th 2007 05:37
I’ve talked about comparing professional fishing to NASCAR before, pointing out its southern roots and rising popularity. I haven’t mentioned that there are teams which represent various companies or corporations like you find in racing.

Advanced Auto Parts is one company trying to raise its profile by sponsoring a team that includes Marty Stone, Gerald Swindle, and John Crews. Rather than waste your time with a stock photo of each angler, I’ve included a video from YouTube at the end of his post. The video is a commercial from Advanced Auto parts. They’re not paying me (unfortunately) but it has some good shots of the featured anglers and , unlike some commercials, you can actually learn something by watching it.

Anglers' corner

December 10th 2007 03:28
It’s hard to write about athletes who still actively compete and that’s why I resist the temptation to write about most of the anglers on tour right now. One big reason I’ve failed to give a blow by blow (cast by cast) account of tournaments is because, let’s face it, fishing is not a spectator sport like basketball or football. Even though I enjoy fishing, when I start reading, “...on day two of the competition So And So was throwing a blue Bomber crankbait…” my eyes start rolling back. TMI! The skill and knowledge it takes to win a fishing tournament is no less noteworthy than a goalie blocking a shot in a shootout. However, I’ll be the first to admit that it is far less dramatic. Also, I think it’s a disservice to any competitor to try and encapsulate a career that is still evolving. Further, in an individual sport like fishing, a person’s attitude goes a long way in determining success. Personal problems may dethrone a champion while a change of scenery can do wonders for a mediocre talent.

Kevin Van Dam is always looked upon as a threat to win any competition he enters. Although he’s only been on the Professional Tour since 1990, he’s been named Angler of the Year three times, won the Bassmaster Classic twice, been named ESPN’s Outdoor Sportsman of the Year and was rated No. 1 at the end of the BASS 2007 season.

Chasing a dream

Takahiro Omori

Would you want to do anything badly enough that you were willing to leave your family, your way of life, everything you knew, even your country? In 1992, that’s just what professional angler Takahiro Omori did. He left his native Japan to pursue his dream of being a pro angler and came to America at the age of 21 because the bass were bigger and the competition was greater.

Mike Iaconelli, Tournament win

For a lot of people, the image they have of fishing is some "good ol' boys" heading down to the "fishin' hole" to drink beer and maybe catch a fish. Professional fishing organizations and equipment manufacturers want to change that perception much the same way the face of NASCAR has changed over the past decade
