A recent post she made about flash photography, inspired me to do a little digging and I came up with some underwater pictures that set the standard by which others are judged. Katyzzz, I dedicate this all to you and hope you don't think I'm trying to steal any of your thunder!

This was the first underwater shot using color. Taken in 1926, it's like a lot of photographs from the era--a little grainy and the focus leaves something to be desired. Underwater flash equipment was not yet developed. This shot required plenty of flash powder!
This underwater portrait is Mr. Deepsea Diver himeslf--no, not Aqualung, not Mike Nelson--it's Jacques Cousteau.
We can thank Mr. Bob Ballard for this image of a propeller from the Titanic. Well know for modern salvage operations, Ballard is the latest diver to carry on the pioneering efforts of Cousteau.
