Eyeing the Walleye
March 17th 2010 01:35
Some people look at walleye as being the next step up from bass fishing. I'm not sure I adhere to that idea but I'm not going to argue to point. All I'm sure about is that they're one of the best fresh water fish you'll ever taste!
Walleye are generally found in North America. I'd be lying if I said I never caught any around here but they're more readily found in the Great Lakes or even Canada.
This is another fish that looks like a fish. Walleyes are generally goldish/olive with a slender body and a prominent dorsal fin. They look very similar to another fish called the sauger. However, walleye have white on their caudal fins and sauger have rows of black dots on their fins.
As with many fish, there are various species. As a whole, fish in one area are going to be slightly different from fish you find a couple hundred miles away .
Wikipedia reports the largest walleye at 42" or 107 cm. You hear numbers like that and see most records are in the 30's or 40's but the typical walleye you're going to catch in only about a foot or two.
Minnows, night crawlers, or even leeches make good bait. Artificial lure that work are plugs imitating minnows, some jigs, or crank baits. Although you can land walleye all year 'round, they most often bite in the spring and during winter, although low temperatures put a halt to night fishing.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
