Weedless--revisited

One thing I like about Orble is that it provides an international readership to one's efforts. (I guess that goes for anything on the www!) The closest I've come to Australia is drinking a can of Foster's while watching Australian Rules Football on ESPN2! (However, I have seen GALLIPOLI four times.)
The differences of national (even STATE) cultures raised its head when I posted about "weedless" lures a few weeks ago. A couple of people have tried calling my bluff, mentioning that the picture I included was inaccurate because the point of the hook is protruding through the surface of the plastic worm. (At least I know people read my posts!)
Granted, to make a lure truly weedless, you'd insert the hook back into the worm just to the point where it's ready to punch through. However, NOT exposing the point is deemed "illegal" in some areas so, all I can say is, "Watch yourself!" It's up to you to know the laws for your area.
I have a problem with laws pertaining to hooks, especially why they mandate something like 1/4" must be exposed. My question is, "Why?" The reason is that 1/4" of exposed metal is supposed to give the fish a "sporting chance." Let's get real! An animal hunting by smell and vibrations, in murky water, often at night, is going to see 1/4" of metal sticking up?!?!?!?!?!?!? SPARE ME!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Don't know much about fishing, but it would seem to me that requiring 1/4" of the hook to be exposed would also make it much more likely that the fisherman might be the one to get hooked! (Since accidents do happen--even among seasoned fishermen, why risk it, when, as you say, the fish probably doesn't notice the hook anyway; and if it does, it probably has no way of understanding its significance.) While the concept behind the rule is commendable, it's probably a bit misguided.
