Why fish bite
May 25th 2009 00:44
Ever wonder why a fish bites? The majority of readers will answer, "Hunger." Without doing any research, I think you can safely say that's the chief reason. However, there are days you dangle a worm or minnow right under a fish's nose and all they do is swim away. And then you have those tournaments where live baits are not allowed so, there must be other reasons fish bite. What are they?
Sometimes fish bite just because they're in a nasty mood and the lure you're using brings out their killer instinct. How else are you going to explain a fish hitting a lure that's almost as big as they are? Fish may not be the brightest creatures on the planet but, they are smart enough to realize when something is too big to eat.

Fish may not be the brightest creatures on the planet but, they are smart enough to realize when something is too big to eat.
Another big reason fish bite is because they are often territorial and are protecting their "turf." When fish are patrolling their spawning beds, just about anything that comes into their neighborhood is considered a "trespasser" and is fair game to be struck.
If you keep casting into the same area , you're probably going to get a few hits because the fish are going to attack the lure out of sheer aggravation. The first few casts may trigger strikes because of the other reasons we listed but, if you keep it up, the fish are going to get mad which often results in a bad attitude and then we go back to the killer instinct.
Artificial lures often imitate food but that hardly explains why fish bite on items such as tubes or spinnerbaits which certainly fail to resemble anything in nature. Still, fish bite on baits such as these out of reflex actions.
One of the chief reflexes you find in fish, especially bass, is competition. If you use a tandem lure combination, two lures with a larger lure seemingly "chasing" the smaller one, the fish will say to himself, "I'm getting a piece of this action," and chase your rig. He may head right to for the smaller lure first or stop along the way to chase off the larger of the two. Whatever the case, since fish don't have arms and can't yell out a warning, their only recourse is to nip at the lures; no matter which one they choose and, hopefully that's going to result in a hook-up for the angler.

Until next time--watch your line and watch yourself!

Mindless rage--that's me right now. I got held up in a small town this morning and had to watch THAT parade and missed my daughter in the parade I wanted to see!
I missed one reason--they have no hands or fingers, what else can they do but bite??? (Works for sharks, too.)

Juxta position is really just a position. But some work so much better than others.
