Why don't water bugs sink?

Have you ever watched bugs bounce on top of the water and wondered why they don't sink? I guess we're not wasting our time because it looks like even scientists have done the same thing!

That's my take also. Surely scientists aren't wasting time and money to find out what we already know! I'm not sure there's ever going to be a follow-up to this. I've surfed around and can't find anything so far.
