Women are fishing!
September 16th 2007 20:19
A study of the topic, leads to one conclusion—fishing is a sport where men and women can compete on an even field. If she’s catching more fish, it doesn’t matter how much you can bench press because if the fish ain’t gonna bite, you ain’t gonna catch ‘em! Today, female anglers can be found at every level and many believe they will be the ones to pass on the legacy and traditions of fishing.
Although world figures are not available, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates that approximately 26% of the anglers in America are women. World numbers, unfortunately, would have to be lower because there are still countries living under customs where the man rules the roost.
Despite this, equipment manufacturers realize the female market has long been neglected and have taken steps to remedy the oversight. To get a piece of the $3 million plus spent by women anglers each year, equipment designs have been modified for a feminine market.
One would wonder what can be done to the most obvious piece of equipment—the rod. The answer is, “Not a lot.” Grips can be thinned down to enable the angler with small hand to have a more stable hold. However, it’s the evolution of rods that has been the biggest benefit to ANY angler. Today’s rods, made from graphite, are stronger and lighter than rods produced just a few years ago. With modern rods, the thing that makes them a “woman’s rod” is the fact that a woman owns it!
The selection of apparel for female anglers is growing as well. As styles and colors are made especially for women, they are no longer forced to choose men’s styles in smaller sizes. As a matter of fact, one of super-angler Kathryn Maroun's many activities is designing a line of clothing for female anglers. It makes sense. Who would know the needs of a woman on the water better than another female angler?
To truly break own the walls of the “boys’ club” perception, savvy women know it will take an all out PR blitz incorporating the media. Always a ground breaker, Karen Savik is doing her part.
Not only has Karen spent the last few years going toe-to-toe with the best anglers on tour, she has also increased women’s profile by being one of the hosts of North American Fisherman. Karen’s extensive knowledge of fishing has surfaced in newspapers, magazines, and books as well as providing insight on a weekly basis through television.
All things considered, the next time a woman makes you a fish dinner, it’s hard to know if it was swimming this morning or came from the fish market!
Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!
