These guys didn't get to fish

November 11th 2007 00:38
There's more to life than fishing.

November 11 marks the day the Great War ended. Perhaps it also marks the time in history that the world lost its innocence. How can you explain boys from America in France or boys from Australia in Turkey?

Veterans of World War I are old enough to be your grandfather's father. Records are inaccurate. It's hard to tell how many are left alive--if any.

They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them,

Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning
We will remember them."
Song - Soldier.

MUSTARD GAS VICTIM
A MUSTARD GAS VICTIM IN WWI
Unlike later wars, World War I doesn't have the visual record so important to become etched in our minds. Still, its impact can be linked to many problems today-- conflict in the Balkans or the rise of Arab nationalism that occurred with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. We learn about World War I only through television, films, or books because there are so few first hand accounts.

I'm sorry if anyone is upset because this post isn't about fishing but, some things have to be recognized!

Until next time--watch yourself and watch your line!

Good on you!
Glad to see someone recognizing it.
My grandfathers fought in WW1, one of them in WW2 as well.

All wars were terrible, WW1, was the worst!

The gassing, the trenches, the tens fo thousands of men lost, sometimes in a matter of a few weeks, all for a few hundred feet of mud.

Lest WE Forget indeed!!

It seems the current administrations of Britain, America and Australia, to name but a few, have well and truly forgotten what an 'honourable war' is all about, and why such a terrible thing should be started.

Instead, these low life criminals, we call our politicians, are masquerading as promoters of peace and democracy, by creating a climate of fear, with a generalised enemy, a perpetual boogeyman, in order to disarm public criticism, so they may make more money from arms sales, obtain more control over lands holding oil and strip their own citizens of all the hard won rights, protections and privileges, fought for and protected by our own people's sacrifice in two world wars, in other peoples' lands.

May sanity and compassion rule, who leads us in the future, and then maybe peace will return in the world.

cheers

fog

Great post James. I can't even begin to imagine how horrific trench warfare must have been. It shouldn't be forgotten.

Fog,

Thanks for stopping by. I was out of my element on this so, I decided to keep it brief! Glad you liked it.

KylieW,

It had to be terrible--mud--disease--death. What really killed me is that I read that they have no definite idea if how many fought in WWl or who they even were because in many cases recruiters were just filling quotas and the true horrors of war were unknown enough that teenagers could run away from home, lie about their age, and enlist and end up on the front lines.
