Check out The 20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures

June 3rd 2014 03:02
I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for almost any list of favorites. Movies, TV programs, soft drinks--you name it. Considering that, it should come as no surprise that I looked at Wired2Fish's list of The 20 Most Influential Bass Fishing Lures with a great deal of interest.

Why the article is dated 2011 and I just saw it on Facebook yesterday is a mystery but, I'll let that go. What I'd like to point out is that although it seems the article and list caters to bass anglers, most of the lures are pretty darned good for all fish!

If you look at this list, you'll notice that most of these lures are really old! One reason is that a good lure is a good lure but, more importantly, this isn't a "favorite" list. Rather, these are lures that have had a major influence on fishing and the manufacturing of fishing tackle. To quote the writers of the article, "We were simply looking for the lures over the years that have had big impacts on fishing and the manufacturing of fishing tackle. What lures really changed the landscape of bass fishing and the fishing industry?"

When you consider that, it's easy to understand why something as pedestrian as a plastic worm headed the list. You have to realize, Creme is often credited as the company perfecting the plastic worm we all use today. And, to the delight of many, a plain ol' plastic worm, regardless of the maker, is still pretty cheap!

Of course, a discussion about any list wouldn't be complete without the, almost, obligatory op/ed.

Personally, I'd have to add the Arbogast Jitterbug to this list. I give it "honorable mention" or "next 20" or something! Admittedly, the Hula Popper came it at No. 10 but the Jitterbug is one lure that comes in different sizes as well as several colors. In fact, I'd have no qualms going after any predatory fish anywhere in the world!

Alas, I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. After all, I'm pretty sure there's someone somewhere saying, "Jittergug? That old piece of crap????"

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
