Using UV lures

September 22nd 2013 01:01
When it comes to lures, just when you think it's all been said and done, something pops up and takes the sport by storm. Ultra-violet lures and tackle seem to be the hot item right now.

UV is short for Ultraviolet light and is is the high-frequency band of light not visible to the human eye. However, UV light can be detected by certain animals. In recent years, scientists have discovered that some fish are able to see light in the UV spectrum. As a result, UV coloring is looked upon by some as the next big thing in fishing lure technology.

Lure manufacturers and fishing pros are paying careful attention to the latest innovations in UV lures and tackle as information becomes available. As it stands right now, no one can say for certain that UV vision plays an important role in getting fish to strike but, no one can say that itís completely irrelevant either!

Remember the black light posters your parents hated? If you remember them, it shows some colors are more UV reactive than others. In fact, a black light is believed to give an approximation of how fish see things.

If you're into tinkering, UV tape and UV paint can be added to your standard lures to help them radiate more light. This can come in real handy in low-visibility conditions such as stained and/or deep water, under ice or snow cover, and during low light conditions such as dusk or dawn.

Remember to take the hooks outta yer pocket before ya sit down!
